Accessible Garden Boxes Under Construction!

Construction of two accessible garden boxes we have been looking forward to introducing to our garden is well underway! Dhruv Manchikalapati of BSA Troop 320 in Fuquay Varina is leading this project for his Eagle Project. Ron Nobles, a retired Industrial Arts teacher, is offering expert guidance (and tools) to implement a complex design from a California state agency. The project will deliver two eight-foot table-top gardens with drainage that will be accessible from both sides by wheelchairs or walkers.

The team worked most of Saturday and Sunday this weekend to complete the majority of the carpentry. The next and final workdays are planned for May 30-31, when final carpentry will be completed and other technical features will be added, including sealant, protective fiberglass, heavy plastic liners, drain tubes, etc. Once the area next to the garden shed is leveled and surfaced, we will be able to move these two pieces to their final location and add soil.

In parallel, Carl is preparing an accessible parking pad and path, as well as filling the area next to the shed with dirt to level it and add a firm substrate. The retaining wall was completed last month.

This will open up the garden to a wider spectrum of participants, which fits well with our mission!
