Back, I say . . . begone!
The Bermuda grass battle royale has escalated, and a bold new approach to garden fortifications has been implemented in a test zone on the North fence. Today, six fearless gardeners cleared out the upper half of the North fence and installed a new barrier with silage tarp material tucked into 12″ deep trenches at the fence and 3 feet outside the fence. New wire mesh was also installed one foot below the surface and two feet above. The plastic deer fencing was trimmed up one foot to eliminate the double layer that Bermuda grass loves to weave into.
Below is what we have been dealing with for several years on the left and the new barrier on the right.

And check out the web of stolons and roots where we trenched!

Many thanks to Anne, Carl, Don, Chris, and Shawn for all the blood, sweat, and tears this morning. It was a hot sun today. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this works!
