YMCA CILT Camp at the Garden

They couldn’t have picked a better day to come to the garden. Temps in the low seventies and partly cloudy! We enjoyed welcoming back again this year the leadership training youth (ages 13-15) from the Kraft YMCA CILTS Camp (Campers in Leadership Training). They are always a fun group to have, and with their enthusiasm, the garden work gets done in no time!

We started out with a fun-facts Q&A about vegetables and fruits plus a brief description of why the garden is important in our community. Carl gave them a quick primer on the various types of rakes we use and when to use which. After that, everyone went to work! This included harvesting three full rows of garlic (which filled a pickup truck) and one row of potatoes (which totalled over 90 pounds). The team learned how to “prep” a row and immediately got one of the former garlic rows fully prepped for planting. They planted watermelon seeds and hand watered them to give them a good start.

Thanks to Penny, Carl, Chris, and Peggy for helping make it all run smoothly. We look forward to having the CILT Campers back again on July 28th!
