Black swallowtail caterpillars on bronze fennel

We are so excited to have our first sighting of pollinator caterpillars in the garden! The beautiful black swallowtail butterflies chose our bronze fennel as the nursery for their little caterpillar babies. We found eight (8) babies on one plant that didn’t have a lot of foliage left so we moved half of them to another bronze fennel so they would all have enough to eat. (This is why you see catapillars in my hand above because normally we leave nature to manage itself.)

I thought you might be interested to know a little about these caterpillars so I’ve created a slideshow below so you can see the amazing metamorphasis these guys go through…
