There was a lot happening at the garden today! In addition to the usual harvest tasks, which yielded an amazing number of beautiful cantaloupe and watermelons, the team removed rows of strawberries and cucumbers and prepped and planted several rows of fall crops. Penny led a special pollinator census among the pollinator gardens as part of the Great Southeast Pollinator Census being held across five states this weekend. Volunteers observed a designated pollinator plant for 15 minutes and recorded counts of different pollinators that visited on tally sheets, which were subsequently uploaded to the citizen science database as part of this multi-state event.
We also filmed the latest in our “How To” series, this time featuring Nick Caronna. Nick gave us a tour of the pepper rows, both hot and sweet, with tips on how to know when to pick them and clues to how to tell how hot or sweet they will be.
