Garden Help…..

Hello gardeners,

Summer is upon us with its usual seasonal conundrum. The vegetables are coming in fast as are the weeds and the bugs. On the other hand many of us have vacations planned to cool off in the mountains, the coast or someplace exotic. (If it’s the latter, can we crawl in a couple of extra suitcases? J) So there are two things we’d like to request of you:

1. No guilt at the garden (or regarding the garden)! As Sandra so aptly said the garden is a joyful place. We all have busy lives, obligations to others and we all need time away. The garden should be a respite, a place of peace and something you look forward to.

2. When you are free, please come join in the fun. The tomatoes are about to come in, with the squash, beans and cukes not far behind. It can be really hot so don’t feel you have to stay the whole workday, but if lots of us pitch in it’s not too much for anyone. Also please remember there are lots of behind the scenes tasks that have to be done regularly like picking up compost from Lowes and Panera, turning the compost, treating for fire ants and mowing and weedeating. Consider volunteering to help with one of these tasks if you’re able – you’ll be the garden leader’s favorite for sure!

We look forward to seeing you!

Anne and Fred

Great post! The garden is one of my favorite places in the world, but I must admit that I miss the “all pitch in with joy” feeling on days when busy lives mean a skeletal “crew”. . I sometimes wrestle with whether to come or not, if I am only able to contribute a little; be it time or physical effort. Thank you for reminding me that even popping in for half an hour of hands-on, if that’s all I/we can manage (especially in the heat) has the potential to exponentially reduce the load AND multiply the results. See you in the Guilt-free Zone soon!
