Fifty K-5 kids at Apex United Methodist Church had an immersive introduction to Simple Gifts Community Garden Friday evening, emerging with smiles on their faces, planted pots in hand, and at least one temporary veggie tattoo on arms and/or hands. They started off viewing a short video about the grand opening of the garden last year, followed by a puppet show produced by Anne, narrated by Monty, and starring Nick (AKA Dash and Buzz) and Penny (AKA Flutter and Dot). Everyone then lined up to select their favorite veggie and apply those decals/tattoos. On to the next station! Debbie K, Peggy, and Deane helped them plant dwarf sunflower and zinnia seeds in peat pots to take home and grow. They also painted canvas bags to take with them and use to bring soft plastics back to the garden (or church) for our the new soft-plastic recycling program.
We encourage families to come to the garden with kids of all ages. You are never too young or too old to garden and help those in need!
