Closing out a Great Year!

What a terrific year at Simple Gifts Community Garden! On a brisk, but pleasant, morning yesterday, many of our garden volunteers came out to finish up some final tasks for the season. Of special note was planting the last perennial row in the garden with some robustly-rooted asparagus plants, generously donated by the Casavant family. This crop takes patience, with first harvest a couple of years down the road, but it is a wonderful addition to our crop portfolio. The team also did a lot of leaf-mulching to protect the plants for winter and keep the weeds to a minimum.

This was also a very special occasion, as we celebrated our first awardee of the President’s Volunteer Service Award! Nathan earned the Bronze PVSA award for his volunteer service to the garden this year, which we awarded right after he finished a 5K race, where he won third place! We are very proud to have Nathan and his whole family as part of our garden family.

Keep watching upcoming posts and emails, as we have more activities coming up during the winter, before we re-open on a regular basis for the spring garden. The crops are continuing to produce abundantly, so we expect to do at least one more harvest and get this wonderful produce to the local food banks as much as we can. We also have a variety of other volunteer opportunities available, so please check those out and sign up as you can.
