New Gate on the North Side – Come on In!

Team standing at the new gate

We are a welcoming place, so what could be better than an additional way to enter the garden? Thanks to Carl’s construction expertise and an eager team of apprentices, we now have an additional gate on the north side of the garden. Good thing, too, since we have recently planted a number of new, native bushes and trees outside that fence that need some TLC, including a serviceberry bush, a hazelnut tree, two long-leaf pines, three fig trees, and two winterberry bushes. OK, figs are not really native, but have you ever tasted a ripe, sweet fig? You get the idea.

Other improvements have been continuing, as well over the past few weeks, including sanding and sealing the picnic tables (thanks Nick and team) and replacing and caulking trim boards on the shed (thanks, Bruce). The garden just gets better and better, and we had a banner year this year, with over 4,000 pounds of produce shared with our food pantry partners! Most recently, we planted three 40-foot rows of strawberries, which were carefully cushioned with a layer of pine straw, watered, and re-covered for the winter today, awaiting a bountiful harvest in the spring. We still have three more Saturday workdays left this season (9:00 AM – 12 noon), so lace up your boots and come on by!
