Strawberry plant give-away!

strawberry plant runners

Our strawberries are just about done fruiting which means you have a great opportunity to take some of these plants home for your garden! Strawberries are perennial meaning they will survive and fruit again next spring. However, we’ve found that they make smaller, harder and fewer berries if you leave them in the ground as is. (You’ve probably noticed that commercial farmers pull them up in the summer. Probably for the same reasons we do, fewer berries the following year and the need to plant something else there for the summer and fall.) BUT strawberry plants send out runners and make baby strawberry plants and these new plants will make very nicely the following year. So come out tomorrow morning and take home as many strawberry babies as you like (of course, we’re sharing amongst us all). You’ll need to keep them weeded and watered as with any plant, but otherwise, not much to do until they start flowering next spring! We’d like to give them all away tomorrow, but there likely will be some Tuesday night too.

Lots of harvest to do and plenty of weeding and watering as well. Tomaotes are starting to come in as well as cucumbers, squash, green beans and raspberries. Please come out tomorrow mornings 8am-noon, help us feed our neighbors in need and take home a delicious taste of summer!
