Saturday – First Garden Work Day of the year!

I’m excited! Are you? 🙂

I was in the Hallmark store yesterday and they have this new series of “Life is Good” cards. One of the cards was in the category “Garden Dreams”. It says “Find yourself a sunny spot. Dig a little. Dream a lot.” (I did buy the card, so I don’t feel guilty sharing the sentiment without paying Hallmark their due.)

Well, it may not be sunny on Saturday according to the weather forecast, but I hope you’ll be able to join us as we dig a little and dream a lot about what we want to accomplish with our garden this year.

I dropped by the garden last weekend to get an idea of what we will be doing this weekend. We’ve got asparagus to clean out, garlic and strawberries to weed, beds to prep and start planting. And Paul has been doing an amazing job cleaning out the aisle between the A and B beds, so I think we’ll need to be hauling a lot of wood chips. I went on a seed-buying frenzy Monday and have lots of things that we’ll be putting in the ground during March! If the weather cooperates Saturday, we’ll try to get some peas, radishes and carrots planted. I’ve also got kale, spinach, lettuce and arugula seeds. And I got some beautiful, locally grown bok choy plants. It makes me hungry just thinking about all these good foods!

Last Saturday, some garden members spent time making vegetable soup for ourselves and for Western Wake Crisis ministry; there were 12 gallons of soup donated. If you’re so inclined this week, would you consider bringing a small donation from your pantry for WWCM? Rice, dried beans, peanut butter, canned meats, spaghetti and spaghetti sauce are always needed staples.

Don’t forget that it’s time to pay your membership dues for 2014. Only $10/family–you won’t find a better bargain anywhere! Invite your neighbors and friends to come join us this year. Everyone is welcome! T-shirts and sweatshirts will also be available for purchase.

I hope to see you this Saturday! We’ll start around 9am and finish up by 12. Come enjoy some dirt therapy!

Peace to us all,

Sandra
