Hi gardeners! Hope you are all doing well; gorgeous day today, eh? (Practicing my Canadian there.
Since the weather is reliably nice and warm now, our Saturday work hours have officially shifted to 8-11. Wendy will be your go-to garden leader tomorrow morning to direct the work. Tomorrow we continue with more bed prep, planting a fifth bed of tomatoes and also some other spring/summer crops. For harvest, we’ve begun pulling radishes and still have some kale; last time I was at the garden, I noticed the kale was starting to bolt, so eat heartily now since it may not last much longer.
Two brief instructional notes today. 1) As you work on bed prep, remember that the optimal width for the beds is about 42” wide. That typically allows us to plant 2 rows in each bed; when the beds are narrower than that, we often have to limit plantings to just one row in the bed which, in turn, limits production. 2) Even though we are blessed with a drip irrigation system, we still try to hand-water newly (and recently) planted beds. The key thing to remember when you are hand-watering is that you want to do it slowly so that the water really soaks in the bed. Blasting the water on the bed usually results in more run-off than soaking. It takes more time, but is worth the effort.
Thanks to everyone that’s been coming out to work at the garden; I’ve been absent a lot lately but hope to re-join you soon! Remember that if you can’t make it tomorrow (or even if you can), we also have a workday on Tuesdays from 5-7.
Hope you have a great weekend, whether at the garden or not!
Peace and blessings,
Sandra
